Many times throughout her life, she had thought about what it might be like to leave the little Amish world into which she had been born. Patricious thought it might be nice to wear tank tops and buy butter in plastic containers from the store. To have conveniences at times seemed worth losing what she had. But as Patricia aged, she learned a valuable lesson. Out there in the wild, wide world, she was a small person, and always would be a small person. Patricia had ambition, which is what had in her younger years, lead her to believe that she would eventually leave her small community and go on to bigger, grander things. What Patricia eventually realized is that it was much better to be a big fish in a small pond, at least for awhile, which is why at the age of forty-five, she was still a member of the amish community. Her ambitions were about to be realized. She was going to extend her influence past the amish community, which was mostly under her thumb already, and to Pennsylvania at large. For nearly five years, Patricia had been the head elder on the council, the youngest ever to hold the position, and had wielded more power than any head elder before her. It was traditionally a figurehead position, that was on par with all the other elders, not ahead of them in any way. Patricia pushed these norms again and again. She used intimidation, coercion, and generally manipulated the softly stipulated rules and norms of amish society to her advantage. It was a society with many rules, but not many punishments that Patricia feared. The system was supposed to spit out people like Patricia.
